Installing OpenHAB on Raspberry Pi

Openhab is an open home automation bus system. It is a platform for components which are used for building automation. Manufacturer of a variety of different vendors and protocol can neutrally interconnect on a single platform. Openhab is an operating system which is independent and can be expanded by adding more bindings of additional technologies / protocols. Engineers designed OpenHAB under the Eclipse Public License and is partially open sourced . The user interfaces available are web browser , Android and Apple iOS app.
In this instructable we will be able to show you on how to install the OpenHAB on your Raspberry Pi and also how to autostart OpenHAB when you start/reboot your Raspberry Pi.

Step 1: Installing the openHAB runtime core in raspberry pi from scratch

First of all access your Raspberry Pi using Putty(SSH), login to root by entering the command sudo –i. After you do this create a directory in /opt name it openhab .The following command will do the job
mkdir /opt/openhab
after that change the directory to openhab
cd /opt/openhab
Then use wget to download openhab runtime file and stores it in the current directory.
wget https://bintray.com/artifact/download/openhab/bin/distribution-1.8.2-runtime.zip
The above command will download the OpenHAB runtime. Sometimes if the above link doesn't work then click here which will lead you to the OpenHAB website as shown in image 1, in downloads right click with the mouse and copy the link location and paste it along with wget on the putty(ssh) terminal window of Pi.
In the image 2 you can see that the it shows the downloading process
Once the download is completed, you will see a terminal window as shown in image 3.This shows the download process is complete.
After the completion of download the following command should be entered
unzip distribution-1.8.2-runtime.zip
It will unzip the files in the folder /opt/openhab
rm distribution-1.8.2-runtime.zip
The above command will delete the compressed file
The image 4 shows the snapshot of unzipping.

 

Step 2: Installing the openHAB addons

Enter the following commands to create the directory with the name addons_repo
mkdir /opt/openhab/addons_repo

Enter the folder
cd /opt/openhab/addons_repo
this will points to the current directory, this can be seen in the image 2.
this command will point to the addons_repo directory and now enter the following command to download the addons,
wget https://bintray.com/artifact/download/openhab/bin/distribution-1.8.2-addons.zip
The above command will download the OpenHAB addons. Sometimes if the above link doesn't work then click here to openHAB website as shown in image 1, in downloads right click with the mouse and copy the link location and paste.This can be seen in the image 2 and image 3 shows the downloading process.
After the downloading is complete, need to enter command to unzip
unzip distribution-1.8.2-addons.zip
and after the unzip process delete the compressed file by entering the command
rm distribution-1.8.2-addons.zip.
Enter this command
cd /opt/openhab
to move to the openhab directory. After entering, copy org.openhab.binding.mqtt-1.8.2.jar from addons_repo to the addons directory by typing the command.
cp addons_repo/org.openhab.binding.mqtt-1.8.2.jar addons/org.openhab.binding.mqtt-1.8.2.jar
Please note in our case we are using mqtt binding so we are doing this step ,any specific binding that you are going to use with openhab should be copied from addons_repo to addons folder .The advantage of having specific binding inside the addon folder instead of all bindings is that openhab will load faster.
The image 4 shows many addons binding files depending on the application user he has copy the files from addon_repo folder to addon folder for that specific application .

Step 3: General configurations needed for openhab.cfg

Now type the commands
cp /opt/openhab/configurations/openhab_default.cfg /opt/openhab/configurations/openhab.cfg
The above command copies the file as shown in the image 1 where it shows the openhab.cfg file .All the default configurations are copied in openhab.cfg

RUN this command
nano /opt/openhab/configurations/openhab.cfg
The command open the openHab.cfg file in the nano editor.Scroll down this page till you see MQTT Transport section. Here we need to uncomment and modify the broker name. For instance in our case we are keeping the broker name as same i.e broker.

modify #mqtt:<broker>.url=tcp://<host>:1883 change this to mqtt:broker.url=tcp://localhost:1883
Similarly change #mqtt:<broker>.clientId=<clientId> to mqtt:broker.clientId=openhab
Similarly change #mqtt:<broker>.retain= <retain> to mqtt:broker.retain=retain
*Note: Remove the #, otherwise openHab will treat it as comment.
After that press ctrl+X and press Y and enter to save the changes.

To download the demo first go to the openhab folder using below command
cd /opt/openhab
then download the demo files by entering this command as shown in the image 1
wget https://bintray.com/artifact/download/openhab/bin/distribution-1.8.2-demo.zip
The above command will download the OpenHAB demo files. Sometimes if the above link doesn't work then click here to open openHAB website as shown in image 2, in downloads right click with the mouse and copy the link location and paste.
Once it is downloaded unzip it .This will give you a prompt saying same name files exist and do you want to overwrite say yes.
unzip distribution-1.8.2-demo.zip
after that delete the zip file by giving the command
rm distribution-1.8.2-demo.zip

Step 6: How to run openHAB demo project

Now it’s time to finally run the OpenHAB.
Enter the command to run openhab .Please note it takes quite some time to start specially on Pi B+
/opt/openhab/start.sh
It will show the message saying Launching the OpenHAB runtime as shown in the image 1. Wait for some time to complete the process.When it's running it will add a line every 2 seconds when it receives new temperature info. If all settings are good it should give the message that openHAB has started you can viewed it on the image 2.
Now you can open a web browser and enter this address
http://192.168.1.10:8080/openhab.app?sitemap=demo (replace 192.168.1.10 with your Pi's IP address) and now you will be able to see the screenshot shown in the image 3. The demo house project has started in that you will be able to see the frames such as First Floor, Ground Floor etc.
To start the openHAB there are two methods one is manually and another is autostart. In the manual case when the user reboots or restarts the raspberry pi, he needs to run the command to start the openHAB i.e; he needs to excute /opt/openhab/start.sh command and wait for sometime, as we have mentioned this while running the demo project. To over come this we can actually autostart openHAB this procedure is describen in the next step.

Before starting this instructable let me thank Erich Styger, the information about autostart openHAB is taken from his blog.
As we have mentioned the disadvantage in the prvious step that every time we have to manually run the openhab by excuting the command whenever we restart the raspberry pi. This instructable tells you how to get started OpenHAB automatically started when we start/restart the Raspberry Pi.
Download the zip file with the autostart from Github.It contains two files: openhab and openhab.conf.
The script file of openhab looks like as shown in the image1.
Place the file openhab into the /etc/init.d/ directory.
Another script file with the name openhab.conf looks like as shown in image2.
Place this file openhab.conf into /etc/default/ directory.

Step 8: Follow the following commands for Autostart openHAB

Follow the following commands, execute them
Change current directory to the init.d folder by typing following command
cd /etc/init.d
Change the file attributes so it can be executed:
sudo chmod a+x openhab
Change the group and owner:
sudo chgrp root openhab
sudo chown root openhab
Verify with this command ls -al openhab
if the permissions look like this:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1821 Sep 30 2014 openhab
Change to the directory where we have copied openhab.conf
cd /etc/default
Insert the script into the run level with:
sudo update-rc.d openhab defaults
This now starts openHAB at boot time.
To stop openhab type command
sudo /etc/init.d/openhab stop
To start openhab type command
sudo /etc/init.d/openhab start
If I ever want to undo this, openhab can be removed again from the autostart by running following command
sudo update-rc.d -f openhab remove

Step 9: Verifying whether the openHAB is autostarting

Now after the previous step, restart your raspberry pi system, Now we have to verify whether the openHAB has started running in background, to check this type the following command
ls /var/run
If the OpenHAB is running in the background you will be able to see the process id of OpenHAB as shown in image1. At any moment you can stop or start the openHAB by running the command as mentioned in the previous step.

openHAB Installation for Windows

 These instructions should work for the various versions of Windows. You need to have Java installed. If you don't or don't know go to http://java.com/ install it. If you have Java already it will tell you.
Next go to http://www.openhab.org/downloads.html and as shown in the screenshot download the "Runtime core" and the "Addons". Choose the save file option. 

Go to the runtime zip file and give it a double click to open the archive.

Click the "Extract all files" button.

Put in C:\openhab for the destination folder. If you want to put it somewhere else there can not be any spaces in the filename or path.

You should see the files being copied.

Then the C:\openhab folder should look like this.

The "addons" folder is where we will put the Java programs that give us new features. We won't actually implement any addons yet but we will get set up to do it later.

Next we need to copy the addons zip file into the addons folder. So I'm going double click the addons folder to open it up.

Now we are going to copy the addons zip file from the downloads folder to the addons folder.

So then we drag it on to the addons window to start the copy.

When we are ready to install addons we will extract only the files we are going to use. We don't want to extract all the files because openHAB will attempt to run every .jar file that is in the addons directory. Nobody wants to do that. For now we won't install any addons but will wait until we have the basics working first.
Now let's double click the zip file just to view the files.

As you can see there are a lot of addons, scan through them and you will get a feel for what a great project openHAB is.

 Well that is it for the openHAB installation. Now you are ready to move on to the configuration instructions.

Windows OpenHAB Configuration

We will be configuring openHAB using the Engimusing starter configuration. This will get your openHAB running and teach you a little more about home automation.
First we download the configuration files by clicking on the link below.
Open the file.

Then extract the contents of the file into your openHAB folder. For example if you followed our installation instructions then it is located at C:\openhab. You can do this by clicking on extract then extract all. Browse to the location of your openHAB folder and click ok.
 
Now, copy and paste the files from the openhab_starter_config folder into the configurations folder of your openHAB folder. If your computer asks you if you want to replace the old files click replace.

Now your openHAB server should be configured with the Engimusing starter configuration. Start your new openHAB web server by double clicking on start or start.bat in your openHAB folder. If everything is working you should see a command prompt open with scrolling text inside. You can watch your openHAB server at work!

The command prompt should stay open. If it doesn't open or, flashes open and closes quickly, then there may be a problem with your Java Path variable. Click here for instructions on how to fix the Path variable.

Now open a web browser and go to:
http://localhost:8080/openhab.app?sitemap=engimusing
You should see this:
 
 Wahoo! (Okay if it didn't work go to openHAB Troubleshooting)
 Now let's do our first small customization by editing the site map file, use your favorite editor like notepad or notepad++.
So here is what the file looks like. So we will change the heading on the top of the web page from "Engimusing Home Automation" to "My Home Automation" (see the high lighted text). So edit the line to what you want for your home automation system.
 
 And after the change.

 We save the file and then the server will automatically update with the new information.
The server will re-read the file every few seconds. So if we reload the page in the browser we see that the title has changed.

 Okay cool so far. We have deployed a full blown web server! This is not just installing an app on your phone.
Speaking of your phone, let's set it up. openHAB is compatible with both iOS and Android. The set up is the same for an iPhone as it is on my Android phone. So go to the App Store or the Play Store, search for "openhab" and install the app.
When you open the openHAB app you will see the following screen. This is the openHAB demo application. You can play around with it if you want.
But since we want to control our own system we need to change some settings. On an Android the settings come up by pressing the left control button below the screen. On an iPhone (or iPad) you will see the "Settings" in the top right. You should see a screen like this next one. See the "Demo Mode" entry? Turn it off and go out of settings.

The app will then search for an openHAB server on your network. If you are lucky today you will soon see your own system just like below.


If it couldn't find the server we need to put in the address of your machine. It is probably a good idea to do this even if it found your machine. So let's go back to settings to set up the "openHAB URL". It expects a URL in the form of http://machine_name:8080 or http://ip_address:8080. If it works with the machine name that is ideal so we will try that first. If you don't know your machine name type hostname into the command line. You can also find the hostname by opening control panel then selecting System and Security and System.  Inside of System scroll down until you see your computer name. This is your hostname. In this example our hostname is "Nixie". So put in your URL like in the following example.

Then go out of settings and see if it worked. If so wahoo! If not type hostname -I to find your IP Address and go to settings and put it in like in this example.

 Go out of settings and try again. Wahoo! You should be able to control your very own home automation system from your smart phone now. (Okay if it didn't work go to openHAB Troubleshooting)

Peengertian Condotel

Seperti singkatannya, kondotel atau kondo hotel ini merupakan bangunan yang terdiri dari unit-unit layaknya apartemen. Tiap unit memiliki dapur, ruang duduk atau kamar tergantung tipe yang ada. Pada beberapa kondotel, ada juga tipe studio. Tiap kondotel dapat menawarkan tipe yang berbeda-beda. Pada condotel biasanya disediakan fasilitas-fasilitas seperti seperti kolam renang, spa, restoran, meeting rooms dan fasilitas lain seperti yang disediakan hotel berbintang, semua ditujukan untuk kenyamanan pengunjung.
Pengertian Kondotel (Condotel / Condominium)


Tiap unit ini kemudian dijual kepada investor. Selanjutnya, unit-unit dikelola oleh operator hotel yang akan memasarkan dan menyewakan secara harian kepada tamu-tamu yang akan menginap di kondotel ini. Kondotel akan difungsikan seperti hotel berbintang. Secara sederhana, kondotel dapat diartikan seperti kondominium atau apartemen yang diolah dan disewakan seperti hotel.

Keuntungan Kondotel

Membeli kondotel (kondominium hotel) atau apatel (apartemen hotel) merupakan salah satu cara berinvestasi dalam bidang properti. Keuntungan investasi yang didaoat melalui kondotel ini antara lain:

  • Memperoleh Hasil Operational, Penggunaan kondotel yang dioperasikan seperti hotel akan menghasilkan pendapatan operational. Pendapatan ini kemudian dibagikan kepada para investor.   • Menginap Gratis, Sebagai investor, Anda bisa mendapatkan menginap di kondotel ini tanpa membayar sehingga Anda dapat merasakan juga fasilitas hotel dan kenyamanan yang disediakan kondotel. Lamanya menginap gratis berkisar 18-30 hari per tahun untuk setiap unit kondotel.
  • Harga Unit yang Semakin Meningkat, Salah satu yang menarik dari investasi properti adalah harganya yang akan terus meningkat mengikuti kenaikan tingkat inflasi. Begitu juga dengan membeli kondotel, harga unit yang Anda beli dapat terus meningkat sehingga akan menghasilkan keuntungan tersendiri. Peningkatan harga dapat mencapai 20% per tahun. Selain itu, kepemilikan Anda terhadap kondotel dapat dijadikan agunan kepada bank jika Anda memerlukan pinjaman uang di bank.

Apa yang Harus Dipastikan Sebelum Membeli Kondotel?

Setelah melihat keuntungan-keuntungan dari berinvestasi condotel, mungkin membuat Anda tertarik juga untuk mebeli unit kondotel. Tetapi, agar investasi Anda menguntungkan, perhatikan hal-hal berikut sebelum memutuskan untuk membeli kondotel:
  • Lokasi, Dalam investasi properti, lokasi tempat berdirinya properti merupakan sesuatu yang sangat penting. Jika tujuan kondotel diperuntukan pelaku bisnis konsep yang dibuat mungkin akan berbeda jika pasar yang dituju adalah keluarga. Tanyalah terlebih dahulu konsep dan fasilitas-fasilitas yang akan dibangun.
  • Pengembang, Pengembang atau developer yang membangun condotel sebaiknya pengembang yang telah terpercaya menyelesaikan bengunan sampai selesai dengan tepat waktu dan sesuai yang dijanjikan. Jangan sampai pengelola menyelesaikan tugasnya dengan lambat atau bahkan tidak menyelesaikan bangunan sehingga bangunan terbelengkalai dan Anda menderita kerugian. Hal ini perlu diperlukan apabila kondotel yang hendak Anda beli masih dalam tahap pembangunan atau belum dibangun.
  • Pengelola Hotel, Agar dapat memberi kenyamanan dan kepuasan pengunjung hotel, maka perlu diperhatikan siapa yang menjadi pengelola hotel ini. Akan lebih baik jika pengelola hotel merupakan pengelola yang sudah terbiasa menjalankan bisnis hotel. Dengan demikian, mereka lebih berpengalaman dalam melakukan management hotel, mengurus hotel juga memberikan pelayanan kepada para tamu. Hasiknya, tamu-tamu akan senang dan akan kembali menginap di hotel tersebut.
Jika Anda berniat melakukan investasi melalui kondotel ini, cobalah untuk melakukan perhitungan terlebih dahulu dan mencari tahu lebih lanjut pada kondotel yang Anda pilih. Cari tahu lebih lanjut tentang pendapatan yang akan Anda dapatkan. Apakah masih ada biaya-biaya lain yang harus Anda bayar dan isi perjanjian agar tidak merugikan Anda.
